Constant TokTok sanity-eater noise from my Synology! – NOT ANYMORE :)

I’m a very happy owner of a Synology 918+ Nas and recently i’ve upgraded from 4x4T 5400RPM drives to 4x8TB 7200 RPM drives. Nothing new under the sun, maybe a bit more noise but nothing crazy. Totally bearable (the nas is in my office about 1.5 m away)
But a few weeks ago i noticed a strange noise, repetitive, Tok Tok, Tok Tok , pause, Tok Tok Tok Tok, pause …
It was slowly but surely creeping inside my head, i was unable to focus or to work in the office without shutting the nas down.
Checked the drives, no fault, SMART ok, everything looked good. Tried to add some foam under the nas to minimize the noise, but no luck it was still unbearable.
Tried to get back to old configuration but no luck since you cannot downsize the volume, you can only go up baby! Too late for that.
Tried to have a look at 8 TB SSDs, terrifying prices, not for my wallet.
After a lot of research i found this interesting post reporting exactly my issue!
In my case , I’ve followed the instructions on the post and uninstalled Active Insight and disabled it in Resource Monitor but with no luck, the noise was still there.
So i started to shut down services one by one.
Until I noticed that when the Pi-hole container is running, I keep hearing that damn noise every few seconds.
I went to Portainer, stopped the container, and now it’s completely silent!

When enabling it again, just after it starts, the constant clock clock, clock clock noise begins again. So, for sure, I will migrate this service to my Proxmox SSD server so that the noise doesn’t drive me crazy.
Pi-hole has now been removed from Docker on my Synology, and if I ever reinstall it in the future, I will make sure to check its internal configuration—just in case it’s logging every packet or doing something that causes it to continuously write to the disks.
It’s simply not usable like this, at least not if the NAS is in the same room.
Mystery solved. Sanity BACK!!!
